The true spirit of India lies in her folk music (lok sangeet) – music that speaks volumes about Indias rich cultural and ethnic diversity. Due to the efforts of several Bollywood musicians and filmmakers, many folk songs have found their way into mainstream pop culture and have helped preserve their rustic charm and appeal. Be it Punjabi, Manipuri, Rajasthani or any other folk song, Bollywood has always used it and accepts its metal in making the song a blockbuster. The use of folk songs in contemporary cinema acts like a catalyst and gives added momentum to the success of the film. Audience taste might have changed over the years but folk-based songs have always found widespread appreciation. For example, Genda Phool (Delhi-6), Hikkanal (Dev.D), Nimbooda (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam), Bhumbro, Rind Poshmaal (Mission Kashmir) or Udd Jaa Kaale Kawan (Gadar), all have been a hit and still continues to be a rage in the industry.
